Unfamiliar Aspects of Titian, 22 September 2010

Autumn Lecture at the Royal Geographical Society given by Sir Timothy Clifford, flamboyant art historian, writer and former director of the National Galleries of Scotland.

Sir Timothy Clifford directed the National Galleries of Scotland from 1984-2006, where he was known for his flair for raising vast sums to purchase important works of art and for his sumptuous transformation of the galleries by displaying art how it would once have been seen in the great houses of Britain and the Continent; paintings double-hung against deep-coloured walls, interspersed with sculpture and furniture.

He began his career in the Dept of Paintings at the Manchester City Art Galleries, moving to the Dept of Ceramics at the V&A in 1972 and in 1976 to the Dept of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum. In 1978 he returned to the Manchester City Art Gallery as its Director until 1984. He is the Chairman of the Summer Olympia Art Fair, a Trustee of the Wallace Collection and of the newly designated Musei Veneziani, and is a Consultant for Simon Dickenson Fine Art.

He has published many articles and lectured widely in Britain, Europe and America on an extensive range of subjects from Majolica to Michelangelo but his great passion is for the Italian Renaissance. In 2005 he made a film about Venice and Titian for the BBC.
With a reputation for being flamboyant and at times controversial, this promises to be an entertaining and enlightening evening.
